program note:
The title of that in shadow or moonlight rises is derived from a line of poetry by Pablo Neruda. The completed line reads, “your body is not only the rose that in shadow or moonlight rises.” The image of this organism that comes to life at night seemed fitting for my piece as the music begins in a soft and quite place, very slowly comes to life and emerges into a full forced unison, and then gradually recedes into nothing.
