go in in in in & in (2017) for cello quintet
duration: ca 12'
commissioned by SAKURA, sponsored by a Tarisio Trust Young Artist Grant
first performance: June 16, 2017 - SAKURA - Sunset ChamberFest in Los Angeles, CA
program note:
go in in in in & in draws its inspiration from the incredible virtuosity of the five cellists of SAKURA, as well as the unique mono-instrument make up of their ensemble. The musical ideas of the piece continually manipulate this mono-instrumental sonic world. At times, all five cellists are moving as a single swarm with individuals briefly popping out but then getting swallowed back up again. Or in contrast, all five players are bricked together as a single unit, densely and unrelentingly pushing forward.
The title go in in in in & in is derived from an excerpt from Ram Dass’s Be Here Now: “go in in in in, further in, oh much further in, oh you’re just begun, keep going back in.”
