As part of a new program beginning this season, members of Firebird Ensemble will be collaborating in performance with some of the most exceptional young musicians emerging onto the new music scene today. On May 16th at the MIMODA Studio at Paper or Plastik Café members of Firebird Ensemble will perform with five OYAI fellows (including the newly formed piano duo HOCKET) in a concert of music by Jonathan Harvey, Conlon Nancarrow, Rebecca Saunders, Henry Cowell, Ted Hearne and Andrew Norman.
Featuring Boston based Firebird Ensemble and OYAI artists Michael Matsuno (flute), Cameron O’Connor (guitar), Peter Myers (cello), and HOCKET (Sarah Gibson and Thomas Kotcheff), the program includes works from Conlon Nancorrow’s other-worldly Sonatina and Player Piano Studies arranged for piano four-hands to Andrew Norman’s Pulitzer Prize finalist string trio, The Companion Guide to Rome. There will also be a new
arrangement of Cowell’s Aeolian Harp for two pianists, Harvey’s ethereal Flight Elegy, Hearne’s exciting trio Vessels, along with Saunders’ chamber ensemble work, Molly’s Song 3, which includes four radios and a music box.
