duration: ca 2.5'
commissioned by Philip Saeta
written for Mark Robson
first performance: September 11, 2018 - Mark Robson - Piano Spheres @ Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, CA
program note:
Etude I. Poorless Wheat Dogs is written after Claude Debussy’s Étude VI. Pour les huit doigts (for eight fingers) and similar to Debussy’s etude, Poorless Wheat Dogs highlights the pianist’s four fingers on each hand. I see my etude as simultaneously an homage to the Debussy as well as a complete American bastardization of it — taking his elegant, charming, and beautifully crafted piece and twisting all the elements through my own personal lens.
